Gmail’s Black Dot

Originally uploaded by Gubatron.

On Both Firefox 3 and Safari, on 2 different GMail accounts I see a black/grayish dot on the top left corner.

Google only indexes Google groups talking about the subject as of today July 4th 2008

Do you get one too?

Please leave comments if you find out what this is about.

I read that it’s an iframe that houses a flash file that plays the sounds when navigating gmail. You could look with Firebug, but my quick look says that it’s an iframe and the page does contain the flash object http://mail.google.com/mail/im/sound.swf

With Firefox 3, add the Add-on “Glazoom”, written by the Daniel Glazman:

    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6489

Then, back on the GMail page, right-click to the “black dot”, and on the opened contextual menu, select the entry “Zoom on Element”.

    :-)

This does not explain what it is used for, but at least, visually, it seems to be like a folded corner of paper.
