I’ve finally taken a week off from work, and I decided to go to one of the must-visit cities on my list while my wife does her Indian journey with her sister. I’m in London, and I must say I’m not that thrilled yet (I haven’t seen anything so far), maybe it’s cause I’m alone, maybe it’s the weather, maybe I’m tired, or maybe I’m too cheap for the freaking prices so far in this city. Here are some of the thoughts I’ve had so far during the trip:

American Airlines for the first time had really good food during the flight. Also the movies on demand rocked, I could watch Valkyrie and Yes Man.

As we started to descend I realized I would not see the sun again during the whole vacation. Anywhere from 10,000 meters to like 100mts from the ground there were layers and layeres of clouds and fog.

Subway cars are tiny

The subway system is a piece of cake

Every thing is twice as expensive as in New York, and it pisses me off

There’s a never ending drizzle

At first I thought the whole place would sound like I was in a harry potter movie, so far I’ve only heard Polish, German, Portuguese, Italian, and very little English with British Accent

Everything reminds me of my wife, traveling with her is 10 times more fun than traveling alone

It’s been only a few hours, hopefully I’ll get used in a couple of days on how crossing the street works, even though there’s signs in most places “Look right!” “Look Left”, I still have to think hard to figure out where cars are coming from on some streets. It’s all so crazy, they should switch.

I forgot my power adapter

Everything is too expensive, 20 pounds for the internet connection on the hotel is not good at all, that’s like $30 usd. In 2 days I’d pay my monthly ISP with that amount of money back home

I still think the US is the best fucking country in the world, no matter how much people hate it, I find everything in america so convenient it’s hard to change it for any other country, at least for me

Update
In the afternoon after I walked more then I got more excited after I went to a few landmarks like the London Eye, Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, and Picadilli Circus (below). I finally got some sleep, but I still feel that I’ve some jetlag on me, so I’ll take more of this sunday to sleep it off, that’s what vacation is for, resting.

The conclusion of the first day, most things in this country are backwards. I’ll try to make a list of them, it’s not only the driving. The bread toaster this morning was backwards, you’d get the bread down by pulling a lever up… wtf.

Well over a year ago I asked a Joost executive why not use some of that money they recently had gotten in funding into going for the living room via Xbox or PS3. I got a politically correct answer about yes, we’ll do it eventually, but that’s not our focus right now.

In the meantime, Hulu was building their platform for the web, and 4 months later it was king of the hill. Joost then had to rethink their distribution and ditched their p2p client for an all Flash streaming based approach, which seems to start picking up traffic but the differences in the audience sizes are ridiculous. A tip for your current approach, and it has to be done a month ago: Allow non-signed users to watch your some of your content (short-clips), <del datetime="2008-11-22T17:09:03+00:00">and allow for embedding, worked wonders for YouTube, it’d be awesome for all that niche oriented content you have.</del> (Update Nov 22 2008: Joost has just released video embedding!)

But even though Hulu has almost 10 times more traffic now than Joost, it’s earnings are still a joke compared to the advertising earnings of Broadcast and Cable, it’s just peanuts. With Ad Spending going down, it would make sense to me as an advertiser to somehow stay in the living room, with cheaper CPM, and better targeting. Hulu & Joost on the Xbox could do that for me, if only they were available in the living room.

Netflix on the other hand, monetizes month to month, and they also saw the opportunity of getting to your living room in different ways. They’ve tried with their own $100 box, but I find the most interesting and convenient way to get an audience of at least 15 million people that spend hours and hours wasting their time in front of their TV playing video games (with barely any ads) in the Xbox console.
They give me as an Xbox Live customer yet another option to keep my Xbox Live subscription and think twice about getting the PS3 and ditching the Xbox live payments since my Netflix subscription gains added value cause I don’t have to plug my laptop anymore to the tv. Wouldn’t it be awesome to have all those Hulu and Joost shows there too?

Netflix has released their stream service this week via Xbox, and it’s exactly the way I suggested to Joost, make it a free download, negotiate with Microsoft an ad revenue agreement, I can think up so many business models from this partnership… I wish I had super powers.

In any case, pictures speak louder than words some times. I hope bizdevs at Hulu & Joost take a look at this and remotely consider this as a probably great channel for content distribution. This could be your chance to grow your audience several orders of magnite, just become a Microsoft Live developer and port your technology (wish it was as easily done as said, I know), Internet Video needs to compete in the living room, forget about mobile for now, the living room is here now.

See More pictures of my Xbox Live update experience.

So today is my birthday and I want to thank everyone who sent out a shout for me in chronological order.
I also want to mention that it was interesting to see a few things:

As my friend Daniel Chang pointed out, it seems that regular people are finally catching up to the internet, I didn’t receive a phone call the whole day, expect from my closest family members. I personally think it’s a pain in the ass getting so many phone calls for the same reason the same day, everybody has finally seen the beauty of digital messaging, and its awesome that everybody seems to have a facebook account nowadays, they just post to the wall and done deal.

There’s some clever Facebook app developers, maybe a little to evil, but I received several “birthday cards”, which in fact were Facebook apps, I didn’t bother to open them as soon as the first one said it was an application which needed access to all my contact info and friend info… bastards. But this makes me think that birthday related functionality is a must, specially if there’s friendship functionality already available to your site. You’ll always have clusters of users interacting with each other thanks to many birthdays a day

So, here it goes, thanks a lot for taking the time to send a shout, pretty cool to know there’s so many people that did so:

- My wife
- My wife’s parents, who came before midnight and gave me a drill for my tool-set as a birthday gift.
- My mom
- My dad
- My sisters
- Laura Borman, now in UK aswell
- Felix Rios
- Eduardo Torres
- Javier Chauran
- Marcelina Knitter, my sister in law
- Honack Villanueva, the most responsible team mate when I was in school
- Gabriela Noriega, it seems now all over the place (CCS/CDG/MAD/LUX/CDG)
- Adelaida Moubayyed, now in Spain

Tonight, July 31st of 2007 I had the privilege of attending a talk by the man himself, the creator of the C++ language, Bjarne Stroustrup.

He was sharing with us how things are going for the next version of C++0x – The 0x stands for a possible year of this decade where it will be released.

One of the interesting things that happened to me at this meeting was to finally have the honor of meeting Sebastian Delmont, and oh, those 3 geeky Red Hat guys, wonder if they were actually part of Red Hat or just hardcore fans, good thing I was wearing my Ubuntu shirt to represent for the Ubunteros.

As for C++0x, I guess my thoughts aren’t that deep, I honestly don’t care much about C++ at this point in my life, and it seems it’s an old language striving hard to keep the pace with newer features found in new languages. It seems its very hard to reach consensus on the C++ board, and its very hard to accept new features given the language is already too big, its also funny to see that everything that gets hughe (millions of people use it), will always have problems in terms of adapting to new conditions or injecting innovation to itself. Bjarne created the language around 25 years ago, and there are features that only now he’s finally been able to get accepted for this version. C++ however, we must admit is a language that’s heavily used, (but I think by end users, not the software engineering community), on software like Photoshop, Google search engine, and the Mars rovers (these were the examples Bjarnes kept bringing again and again, I would also be proud of course).

For me, I’ll stick to Python, Nasa’s been using it too for quite a while, the same with Google and many other applications, hey, YouTube’s backend runs in python.

Not only they have all the polish stuff that you can get in this neighborhood (which makes my wife’s life a lot better), but they also have latin food and best of all they have Harina Pan, to make the best arepas a Venezuelan guy could eat.

I often have stupid ideas that could actually be applied to make real world every-day-people-related systems better, but I never write them down. I had this idea a few months ago, but forgot to write about it, hopefully someone on the New York MTA will read it one day and will have the power to propose it to their executive board.

If you travel on the subway like me, you can travel forward in time if you use the correct doors from train to train, I think you actually travel forward in time, instead of wasting time, if you for example need to Switch to L on 14st and you’re at Canal St, all you need to do, is take the express Yellow Line (I think it’s the R), but to make the best of your time, you need to walk to the very last cart of that platform, you make use of your “waiting time” to travel forward in time (or save time) once you get to 14st, since you get off, and the stairs to the L transfer will be right on the end of the track, then you go down stairs, and if you’re lucky enough, you can make it to the L without waiting.

I say you travel forward in time, cause if you get on the first car of the R, you will loose all your “waiting time” sitting at the beginnnig, and then you will have to do the walk you didn’t do in Canal St, when you get to Union Square…

so… in short, after this absurd, but “clear” example (yeah right), what’s the solution?

Make everybody travel like this…

If you do, and you have a well designed system, based on mining patterns on how your metro users travel every day, you could design the metro system to have people ride in certain cars.

You could either… mark cars of the train to say:

“This car will give you an optimum get off time if you get off at:
- station blah, blah, blah
or if you need to transfer to: L, 1,2,3″

So, you don’t stand in the way for people that actually need to get off and run for their next transfer…
anyway… just the thought of a maniac of traveling optimally on the subway.

Not sure if this made any sense gramatically, and I don’t think its even worth revising it… just ventilating my frustration with slow people…

Oh, and another thing, there should be “Staircases for People in a Hurry”, or “Fast Lanes in Staircases”, not just Up and Down directions, but actual, fast stair cases, so we don’t have to smell people’s asses going up the stairs like they’re doing a walk on the zoo on a sunday, please move your ass on the stairs people, you can make people loose transfers.

- Caracas tiene Sabor a muchas Ciudades, a veces New York me recuerda a Caracas, y ciertamente Paris me recuerda a Caracas

So today I found out someone used the picture that I have on this blog where I’m holding a driver license (I blurred the number of the license),
still he’s using it just to give confidence to his victims.

He says he used to live in the US, and shows my picture holding the driver license saying “Here’s me with my NY Driver License”, he uses my name, and even has created a whole story around me being a computer geek. He even sends a picture of his fake MIT Degree with honors to give confidence to his victims.

The money gets sent somewhere in asia, and he’s pretty hard to trace, so just don’t buy any airplane tickets from me, I don’t do that.

There are some references online to the same bastard.

Here’s the post he used in Craigslist to scam his latest victims

http://berlin.craigslist.org/tix/323458736.html

AND THIS IS HOW HE GETS THE MONEY (Son of a bitch)

Hi [VictimNameHere],

Here are the updated payment instructions. It would be helpful if you could take the email
with you to the bank as some of the information below will have to be included in the bank's transfer form.

1-- Please visit one of the Reisebank branches I mentioned in my earlier email.

2-- Fill up the "Bargeld Versenden" form. Send your payment to my wife:

Vireak Buth (Nachname: BUTH; Vorname: Vireak)

Address:

Vireak Buth, Customer Relations Manager
Singapore Commercial Bank (SBC)
Boulevard Nehru
Phnom Penh, Cambodia

The bank's form might ask for the recipient's contact phone number. Please put my New York number
as it is autodiverted to the Cambodian network via satellite. Here it is: +1-315-285-4379.
If anyone calls that number, we can be reached day and night but it is very expensive
for us due to satellite connection rates for USA to Cambodia, i.e. if someone calls us,
we have to pay for that person's call to be diverted from New York to Cambodia.
The local phone company here is unreliable and it is very hard to get a clear connection.

On the transfer form, you will be asked to specify the destination of your payment.
Please indicate "Cambodia".

The Reisebank has a transfer fee for their "Blitzueberweisung" service. In mutual fairness,
please pay for that fee separately. I will be responsible for the Fedex delivery fee of
these vouchers to your Berlin address. Fedex from Cambodia to Germany is about 3 business days.

Total for 2 Northwest/KLM vouchers: 600 euros
For 3 vouchers: 850 euros (50 euro discount if taking all three)

If you take the third voucher, it is valid until April 2008. Either you or someone else can use
it for a future roundtrip. It would also be the perfect birthday or Christmas gift, as it is a
nameless or bearer voucher (Ueberbringergutschein). The third voucher could be yours for
250 euros on top of the 600 euros for the two vouchers you and Alex want.

Here in Cambodia it will not be possible to claim your transferred money without the MTCN
(money transfer control number). This will be found on bank's receipt.
You will get one after you finish the transaction at Reisebank.

When you have completed the transfer, kindly email me the full name of the sender of the
payment, i.e. the person who completed the payment at Reisebank. I will also need the MTCN or
money transfer control number which would be on the bank's receipt (Quittung).

Angel

Please be careful when sending money to strangers on the internet.

Click Here to see the specs from Flickr.com which ranks it as the #2 Camera from Canon being the number one an older model, which if you see the Flickr user graphs has started to decay so this Digital Rebel XTi is likely to become the number one camera from Canon in Flickr.com

For a total of $990 (including taxes), I got myself what I’d call a professional camera with lense, 4.0gb compact flash card, SD/CF usb reader and extra one extra battery.

Now I gotta learn how to use it well before the wedding, but being in New York it’s gonna be a lot of fun taking pictures with the Rebel XTi

Has cosas diferentes y tendras resultados diferentes.

General IQ Score

Damn it, I was good but took too long, If you don’t put the time penalization my General IQ is 146. I feel limited, I wanted to be above 150 :(

I get to be a bit special but not too much, since I read this somewhere on the internet:

“Only approximately 1% of the people in the world have an IQ of 135 or over”

Here’s the explanation of my results:

Your General IQ Score of 139 shows how able your mind is in general. Anyone with a General IQ Score this high is considered to be gifted. This score is better than 99.53% of all persons taking this test. Virtually all occupations can be comprehended with a General IQ this high. You should be able to handle almost all academic challenges.

You scored higher than your General IQ Score in 12 individual ability categories. 5 of these better scores could be called statistically significant and may indicate special abilities, or that you were distracted on those parts of the IQ Test that counted more heavily in the other ability categories.
Arithmetic

Solving many of the IQ Test’s problems required the ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers mentally. Many mental tasks require arithmetical operations even though numbers may not be involved, and thus number manipulation abilities can strongly indicate general intelligence.

Your Arithmetic IQ score of 149 is exceptionally higher than your General IQ score. This score is better than 99.95% of all persons taking this test.
Spatial Skill

Understanding what changes will occur when conditions vary is a deep and powerful ability of the mind. All invention and creativity of every sort is based upon this ability. Although test problems usually involve manipulation of objects in space, persons with a stronger ability to spatially manipulate can also be expected to use this ability to be able to better predict how social and psychological situations would change due to variation.

Your Spatial Skill IQ score of 144 is not significantly different from your General IQ score. This score is better than 99.83% of all persons taking this test.
Logical

This is the ability to determine if a set of rules has been correctly followed. This ability is most useful in combination with other mental skills listed above. Those with strong logical ability are quicker to see where a given set of conditions is going to lead, have a strong sense of justice, and better understand–from an intellectual analysis–the benefits of harmony.

Your Logical IQ score of 148 is exceptionally higher than your General IQ score. This score is better than 99.93% of all persons taking this test.
Spelling

The ability to spell can indicate general intelligence. Remembering a set sequence of letters indicates the mind’s ability to retrieve remembered facts. Learning how to spell and use the words of a language is almost a complete IQ test in itself. Although poor spellers with high IQ scores can be found, it is rare, and in general–everything else being equal–the better spellers have higher IQ scores.

Your Spelling IQ score of 149 is exceptionally higher than your General IQ score. This score is better than 99.95% of all persons taking this test.
Short Term Memory

The ability to remember things for a short period of time allows the mind to check back and retrieve facts needed to complete a problem solving operation. This ability becomes more critical when problems have many aspects that need consideration and/or need to be solved mentally. This ability strongly determines how efficiently one handles the many aspects of normal life. If your short term memory ability is strong you are much less likely to seem inattentive or “slow to get it” to others.

Your Short Term Memory IQ score of 144 is not significantly different from your General IQ score. This score is better than 99.83% of all persons taking this test.
Rote Utilization

This is the ability to take a set of memorized facts and mentally extract and/or operate with or upon the facts within the set that are pertinent to the problem at hand. Persons with more of this ability can be expected to spell well, remember telephone and other numbers easily, be more adroit in procedural operations, and have a stronger foundation for tasks that require the use of memorized material.

Your Rote Utilization IQ score of 151 is exceptionally higher than your General IQ score. This score is better than 99.97% of all persons taking this test.
Algebraic

This is the ability of the mind to abstractly handle quantities and qualities. Persons who are strong in this ability can more quickly and more deeply understand analogies, stories, derivations, equalities, and hierarchical structures.

Your Algebraic IQ score of 149 is exceptionally higher than your General IQ score. This score is better than 99.95% of all persons taking this test.
General Knowledge

Knowledge that is casually picked up and remembered can indicate intelligence, because persons with higher intelligence will exhibit greater retention of those pieces of information that are encountered less often. Because higher intelligence allows a person to have a deeper appreciation of the connectivity of facts that may seem disparate to others of lesser intelligence, memory of such facts becomes easier.

Your General Knowledge IQ score of 147 is exceptionally higher than your General IQ score. This score is better than 99.91% of all persons taking this test.
Visual Apprehension

This is the ability of the mind to mentally picture visual information and to be able to extract portions of that information for separate use. A person whose visual apprehension is strong enjoys a richer, more creative appreciation of visual aspects of experiences.

Your Visual Apprehension IQ score of 145 is not significantly different from your General IQ score. This score is better than 99.87% of all persons taking this test.
Geometric

How well one can comprehend geometric relationships of lines, sides, planes, angles, and topological properties strongly determines one’s ability to make sense of visual information. The strength of one’s geometric ability can strongly determine how quickly knowledge can be absorbed if it is presented visually.

Your Geometric IQ score of 142 is not significantly different from your General IQ score. This score is better than 99.74% of all persons taking this test.
Vocabulary

Knowing the meaning of words is an ability that directly increases along with the increase of general intelligence. The meaning of a word is more easily remembered with higher intelligence, because it takes more intelligence to understand and correctly use words based upon the subtle differences between words with similar meanings and to comprehend difficult concepts which are sometimes symbolized by a single word.

Your Vocabulary IQ score of 144 is not significantly different from your General IQ score. This score is better than 99.83% of all persons taking this test.
Intuition

Intuition is defined as that ability of the mind to develop answers to questions without consciously dealing with the problem at hand. Often a question will provoke your mind to answer without using conscious processing time, and the answer is said to come “out of the blue” or “suddenly, it just struck me”. Of all the many abilities of the mind, this is one of the most often used. Just knowing what to do is often an automatic process that occurs without much conscious figuring. Those with stronger intuition make less mistakes and can seem luckier, wiser, or more mature.

Your Intuition IQ score of 143 is not significantly different from your General IQ score. This score is better than 99.79% of all persons taking this test.
Computational Speed

If you can correctly solve a variety of problems faster than another person, you may be demonstrating a generally more orderly internal arrangement of your mind’s problem solving methods. While speed cannot be the sole factor in determining overall superiority in one mental operations, in general faster computational speed will often indicate that a problem’s comprehension was more complete. With everything else being equal, a person with faster computational speed than another person’s will be better at tasks that require the synthesis of many bits of information.

Your Computational Speed IQ score of 53 is significantly lower than your General IQ score. This score is better than 0.09% of all persons taking this test.

I did the test at www.iqtest.com

2006 was a great year for me, and now that I think about having an even better 2007 I guess its worth to resume the last 10 years in this post, since it was 1996 the year I finished high school.

1996, I want to be an engineer

I’m 16 years old, finished high school and got accepted to study Software Engineering at the UCAB in Caracas, Venezuela. The university just opened up the career that year so I was there for the first classes ever given to software engineering students in the faculty, we had a lot of responsability into being the best we could be to make a name for the school, and so far I think we’ve been doing a great job, in our country and out.

During these years my parents sold their accounting firm and bought a liquor store, in 98 Chavez wins the president and things start getting worse and worse economically for us.

After a lot of hard work, sacrifices and being really really broke for many years I finished school and got my engineering degree in 6 years.

During this time I worked for Microsoft Venezuela doing marketing and product launch support, then I worked for the venezuelan Java Center with great java engineers, I might say the best java engineers in the country at that time (Ing. Sergio Fernandez), then I worked for a consulting company called DKV Asociados along engineer Angel Olivera doing my internship and thesis under his tutorship.

2002, I’m an Engineer

Here’s a picture of the group on the graduation day, most of us started on the first promotion but ended on the third one, things in school in Venezuela aren’t as easy as in the US where you pretty much know what’s gonna happen on your exams.

So right after graduation, that december the country goes on a full stop for over a month so that Chavez would quit, but he won’t do it, even the oil industry goes along with it, Mr. Chavez just fired almost every executive wasting millions of dollars in human capital, as a consequence many other companies that work with the companie loose all the contracts, including the one where I worked for, so I pretty much lost my job…

2003, Flirt with the US, then leave my country
So I get a call from a friend in the oil industry telling me there’s a startup in Miami that needs a pocket pc developer, I start working for them off shore, and a few months later…

I’m off to Miami. I travel back and forth until the company decides to take me in for good.

After a year of work and learning all what I needed to learn about the job and developing a larger scale system and the american culture…

Up to this point… from 2000 till like aug 2004, Marjorie was very much part of my life, but everything has an end and so did my chapter in Miami, I went on a trip to New York for the first time I believe in May 2004, this trip absolutely changed my perception of life and I felt I was completely wasting my time in Miami, I saw the people in the city and thought to myself, what do you have to do to live in such an expensive place, its so cool, they’re so lucky to live here, I wish one day I may come to live here.

Me for the first time in New York

I went back to Miami, and found out about a website that put a lot of doubt into what I should do with my life if I wanted to go live in New York, the site is Craigslist, in it, I saw over 50 New York job offers on Information technology when in Miami I’d only would see no more than 5 posts a day, plus the pay was way better.

So, I took a weekend off with my friend Tati and we went to Orlando to do all the parks, during the long lines I made the decision and told Tati that I’m leaving to New York.

2004, New York, New York

On September 2nd 2004, one day after my birthday, I came with my suitcases to New York where my friend Maritza received me for one night and helped me get up on my feet.

I had my employer pay me all the money they owed me, and I went to New York with $9000, my logic was this. I just turned 25, If I go back to my country with $9000 they will be spent anyway, so why not go and give it a try in New York while I’m still processing the VISA. I had no place to stay, so I had to look for a place asap, I had no source of income so I had to save until my last penny to stretch those $9000 as much as I could, and I gotta move fast because I don’t want to be illegal. Being optimistic and following my dreams will always be one of my premises.

I lived in West New York, NJ, paid $100 a week on a very small room, tried to live on $5 to $10 a day and the only thing I did was send resume’s to postings on craigslist and monster. I learned everything about resume’s, cover letter’s and interviews (the hard way), and a month and a half after I found my second employer in the US willing to sponsor my H1B visa. I worked as a consultant and I only did one project for one of their clients, Nielsen Entertainment in White Plains, NY, here I learned a lot about Unix, Linux, Perl, and above all, I learned how to use emacs under the teachings of David Link, one great engineer who used to work for Oracle and at the time developed an amazing dataware house system written in perl for Nielsen, my props to this great hacker.

I wasn’t contempt still with my first success in the city, finally recovering financially from moving away and no longer living on $5 a day, I kept looking for jobs, and I found a little company named “LimeWire” :), which creates a P2P application, and I thought it’d be the most amazing thing to work with these java hackers and learn about the world of P2P.

Next thing you know…

2005, LimeWire

I’m working for LimeWire as their web developer, here I learned a lot about running a high traffic website, and above all I learned a lot of what it means to be an open source developer and the culture around this.

This is probably one of the best things that has ever happened to me career wise, I got to learn a lot and I was surrounded by people of an amazing level of intelligence and computer software knowledge, I’m very thankful for this.

2006, Year of big changes, and trips

At this point I’m still working for LimeWire and thanks to them I went to Austria

Egg, Austria

there I came in contact with python, which I believe is a tool that’s changing my professional life, plus I enjoy coding in it a lot, there I started writing an RSS engine which I called “SnowRSS” since I started writing it there sitting with all that snow around me. SnowRSS runs everyday as the core of wedoit4you.com rss fetching engine.

Also after leaving LimeWire I was free to join FrostWire, and we recently launched a new version on which I learned a hell of a lot more on what comes in to play about releasing client software for the masses in multiple operating systems (Windows, Mac and Linux)

2006 was a year of many changes and trips, this year I:

- Switched jobs twice, worked for Flycell.com, and now I’ve settled at Temboo where I feel super lucky and happy doing many exciting things and surrounded by the most amazing team of engineers

- Started the wedoit4you.com podcast and blog directory, its has been one of the most rewarding hobbies which allows me to be in contact with technology and with my good friend Tati.

- Since the change of visa, I couldn’t leave the country so I decided to get to know the country with my girlfriend, I went to:

Jim Thorpe, PA

San Francisco, CA

Chicago, IL

Cleveland, OH

Bear Mountain, NY

Washington DC

Las Vegas, NV

Grand Canyon, AZ

Also, my girlfriend graduates in Syracuse (after one year of a long distance relationship)

and we finally moved in together in Brooklyn, NY

so what now in 2007? what will be of the next decade?

Hopefully everything will be even better this year, I just hope me and my family have health to accomplish all the goals, and maybe this year things will keep moving at a fast pace, I expect to launch my own piece of software, finally have the visa stamped on my passport so that I can travel outside the country and visit europe or asia, and maybe who knows, I might even get married with my princess.

So for the next decade, I hope to become an even better person, professionally and personally, I hope to achieve my goal of making my first million during this decade, and hopefully will be able to get closer to my family somehow, at this moment I guess that part of my life is a bit broken, everyone lives at a different place, but what are you gonna do, everything to live free without the menace of a communist government.

Happy New Year 2007, now let’s make all our dreams happen so let’s not waste any time and get to work on them.

Montar a caballo significa exito, riqueza.

This is the calculator that went to almost every exam I took starting from Calculus II.

I gave the money to my friend Rosa who came that year to New York with her parents and bought it here, so the calculator is back home now.

Without this equipment I wouldn’t be here, its an old calculator but very powerful, and like the ipods nowadays, it was the calculator to have on my engineering school.

There were some who used Casio’s, or Texas Instruments, but they sucked balls cause they didn’t get to beam each other programs, or “exam references” :)

Go HP48G

Here’s an article on wikipedia about the HP-48 series
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HP-48

From 3.7Mhz to 4Mhz CPU frequency depending on temperature.
32K RAM (Not expandable, since that was the 48GX which had 128K RAM)
512K ROM

Supported a programming language called RPL (Reverse Polish Lisp)

All the programming I ever did was more of functional composition than anything else.

This thing rocked to solve equation systems of many variables, plotting, and even accounting. If you know how to use one, you know you can be pretty fast, you just have to know reverse polish notation.

Everybody had one of these in my school so you had to tag it somehow, it came with a blank metal plate.

My full name was engraved in the city of Guacara (Estado Carabobo, Venezuela), I have a cousin who used to own a sports shop, he had an engraving machine for trophies and the such.

Turn up the Volume all the way, the music will be cool

Download in high resolution (Needs Quicktime or VLC with Quicktime codec Share it with Frostwire)

Anyways, this is just a test of what I can do with iMovie and a crappy cam, I already have over 20 minutes of footage of all Manhattan which I recorded a couple months ago, and I’m putting something much better for you guys to appreciate why I love New York.

Donations are welcome by paypal, I need to buy a minidv cam, it’s just $350, it’d be cool if you could help me get half, just send paypal money to gubatron@gmail.com (Just in case that there’s a good soul out there who’ll give at least $1 for the entertainment)

Here’s the release post on the LimeWire Blog

Check out the credits of the software, I used to be on the Web Dev Team, my props to Andrew Fischler and best of luck to Dave Yeu, it’s great to be a web dev for such an exciting site, I’m sure you’ll learn a lot.

I’m thankful they kept me on the credits. Hi to Meghan Formel and Karl Magdsick who also moved on to other exciting projects, the best to you too.

Inspired by LimeWire’s owner, Mark Gorton, the LimeWire project is a collaborative open source effort involving programmers and researchers from all over the world. The collaborative nature of Gnutella is also reflected in the Gnutella Developers Forum (GDF), of which LimeWire is a participant. The members of the GDF work in the trenches every day to make Gnutella a truly innovative collection of protocols that is constantly improving — a testament to the power of open protocols and open standards.

LimeWire is also, of course, the result of the countless hours of work by LimeWire’s developers:
Greg Bildson
Sam Berlin
Zlatin Balevsky
Roger Kapsi
Mark Kornfilt
Akshay Kumar
Kevin Faaborg
Justin Schmidt
Tim Olsen
Felix Berger

Behind the scenes business strategy and day-to-day affairs are handled by LimeWire’s business developers:
Katie Catillaz
Rachel Sterne
Jesse Rubenfeld

The LimeWire web site and LimeWire graphic design are the hard work of LimeWire’s web team:
Andrew Fischler Jr.
Dave Yeu

LimeWire PRO questions are dutifully answered by LimeWire technical support:
Zenzele Bell
Kirk Kahn
Christine Cioffari

In addition, the following individuals have worked on the LimeWire team in the past but have since moved on to other projects:
Aubrey Arago
Susheel Daswani
Adam Fisk
Meghan Formel
Tarun Kapoor
Angel Leon (Me me me me!)
Karl Magdsick
Yusuke Naito
Dave Nicponski
Christine Nicponski
Christopher Rohrs
Anurag Singla
Robert Soule
Sumeet Thadani
Ron Vogl

LimeWire open source contributors have provided significant code and many bug fixes, ideas, research, etc. to the project as well. Those listed below have either written code that is distributed with every version of LimeWire, have identified serious bugs in the code, or both:
Richie Bielak
Jerry Charumilind
Marvin Chase
Robert Collins
Kenneth Corbin
David Graff
Andy Hedges
Michael Hirsch
Jens-Uwe Mager
Gordon Mohr
Chance Moore
Rick T. Piazza
Eugene Romanenko
Gregorio Roper
William Rucklidge
Phil Schalm
Eric Seidel
Philippe Verdy
Stephan Weber
Jason Winzenried

LimeWire would also like to thank the many contributors to the internationalization project, both for the application itself and for the LimeWire web site. Several colleagues in the Gnutella community merit special thanks. These include:
Vincent Falco — Free Peers, Inc.
Gordon Mohr — Bitzi, Inc.
John Marshall — Gnucleus
Jason Thomas — Swapper
Brander Lien — ToadNode
Angelo Sotira — www.gnutella.com
Marc Molinaro — www.gnutelliums.com
Simon Bellwood — www.gnutella.co.uk
Serguei Osokine
Justin Chapweske
Mike Green
Raphael Manfredi
Tor Klingberg
Mickael Prinkey
Sean Ediger
Kath Whittle
Finally, LimeWire would like to extend its sincere thanks to these developers, users, and all others who have contributed their ideas to the project. Without LimeWire users, the LimeWire network would not exist.

Hey Ian, you know what this means right?

I went yesterday to the opening of X-Men III, and I found it as the best of the 3 movies (Wish it had been this way for the Matrix, my favorite is the second, the third had a too simple ending)

I was expecting a lot from the Da Vinci code, but they couldn’t make it as rich as the book because there’s moronic people in the world who wouldn’t understand or appreciate the historic details, the simbology explanations of the book or better yet, the code breaking. So, I guess that’s why I didn’t enjoy it as much, it was good though.

But this year, the movie I’ve enjoyed more, the one that kept me entertained, laughing, and didn’t let me blink was X-Men III, I truly recommend this film, specially if you saw the last 2 installments.

The second movie I enjoyed more from what this year has brought us has been V for Vendetta, there was a lot of political message and hints of how fucked up our political systems are while they present a great story.

Now I’m looking forward to see “An Inconvenient Truth” a film about the effects of global warming, you should see the trailer, it’s a film presented by Al-Gore, who maybe doing a little political campaign while creating awareness of this problem.

So, don’t wait another second and get your tickets to see X-Men III this weekend.

Oh. and reading user comments I found out that there’s a scene at the end of the credits, which I missed cause I stormed out of the theater, so I have a legitimate reason to go see it again, grrrr.

This is why I try not to leave home without a camera, I love New York.

I found this group of musicians today on my way back home at the Columbus Circle subway station, around 7pm, on the Blue line platform.

If you guys get to see this, I was the first person to put some cash on your cello cover, then I started recording this.

I wish I would’ve gotten more footage but I ran out of battery (thank you Murphey!)

PS: For some reason the video stalls towards the end on my computer, in case you can’t see the URL of their site, please go to BreakOfReality.com

It’s been a while I don’t wake up and write down what I just dreamed, let’s see how well I remember the dream I had this morning.

It seems the episode of south park where the elderly people take over the town to recover their driver’s licenses, in a funny way has some truth to it, old people wake up fucking early, some of them get things done while we sleep in, some of them just wake up on a saturday morning at 6:30am and start yelling at their TV.

Last night I went to bed at 3am coding language support for SnowRSS (yay finally) and this morning, the old man that lives next to me, who fucking <strike>speaks</strike> yells to the TV everytime he sees what he considers a bad sport player “Get Rid of Him, That son of a Bitch” (with an italian accent), woke me up just now, at 7:30am, If he only knew the tv can’t hear him and he rembered that he’s yelling, I would have a much better story to tell you now.

From the dream, I just remember I was either talking or thinking that the NSA (National Security Agency) owned the Human Genome Project, also they owned Google because they needed to know more about people’s life for one of it’s purposes.

In this case, it seemed the government had a project where all this information could be used to factor humans with specific qualities to target different problems. Let me explain,
If they for example needed a human being that had certain characteristics phisically, and certain mind characteristics for a task they foresaw in the future, such as the creation of a nanoweapon or something very different but equally important to them, as the creation of a political leader, etc.

The government would use their data on people’s behaviour, social background, relationships, and their genetic data, to be able to know which people should get together to live (at different levels, who should be friends, who should live together, who should leave you) to “naturally” engineer special human beings… this means, suppose you were born in 1980 and you had a certain cultural background and social interaction, and you were one of the key factors on the creation of this special being, they would run your data (genetic, social, cultural, academical, profesional, tastes, shopping behaviour, medical, etc) against thousands of people found to be usable for this project, then with the outputs of this computations they would find someone else born in 83, in certain region of the world, would be convenient to marry you so that you can have a child with certain characteristics which in turn could either be THE ONE, or part of the next process for the creation of THE ONE.
I know I’m crazy, but I think everything is possible, and once again… this was a dream.

If this match wasn’t needed in the next few years, they could run this algorithm in several other possible couples in all the world to find a match for your would be children, and so on in as many necessary generations, until they’d finally have that perfect person for that important role.

Then they would use their tentacles to have you live and work and certain places, meet certain people, etc (remember the power they have, remember other people might be engineered to be part of the process of engineering of others), it’s almost as if we were genetically pre-programmed, that we all had a purpose.

So that’s what I remember from this dream. Things I’ve watched this week:

South Park every night

V for Vendetta

Lost

I’ve also thought a lot about the Matrix, how I think a lot of people in the Matrix were just programs that had a purpose, and how in a way, Agents were like Garbage collection systems, entitled to delete unreferenced objects from the memory of the Matrix, they talked a lot about purpose, when Objects aren’t referenced by anyother element in a system, it means they’re done with what they’re doing, and it’s the job of the Garbage collector to clean unused memory, I think that’s what the Agent’s were in the matrix, a much more higher level version of Garbage Collection inside that massive interactive neural simulation.
Gotta love that fucking movie.
