I guess some people are very jaded, or don’t get why do we have poems. I’d say this would be the same as “Why Music”, “Why Movies”. Sad… or maybe they’re looking for poems that ask the question “why”? I don’t get this one.

A lot of suicidal people looking for answers in Google, crazy shit. Let’s hope Google’s first result page is very encouraging to keep living. The first result goes to suicide.com. Again, Sad, but interesting to see that there’s a lot of people who ask themselves that question. I must be one very happy person, never crossed my mind such a thing.

The top 3 states with suicidal tendencies on Google seem to be Kentucky, Iowa and Rhode Island. Things must be hard in those places these days.

There seems to be a bunch of “why” jokes around. The first search result takes you to a long ass list of jokes that start with the word “why”. For example:

Good one! This is a very tough to answer, there’s really no definite explanation, mine would be that we have still a few thousand or more years to go until we mutate and get rid of them, pretty much evolution in the process is my belief.

This one truly cracked me up. Out of all why questions in the world, the majority of people using google are wondering about what happen to one man. Leave the poor guy alone. The first search result takes you to a cronological essay about Michael Jackson’s morphosis, I bet it does answer it. The second result is an answer in Wiki Answers which tells us 3 theories, but in the end none knows how he actually did it, it’s all rumors that eventually will come out unless all the parties involved die and no documentation is left behind about the procedures.

I guess if someone knew how to do this and it was an easy process there would already be one huge industry for self-racists to convert to white. I know a few myself that would be inline as soon as they’d have the money.

So I guess a lot of Dog owners can’t figure out why their carnivore pets tend to be mowing the lawn or eating grass and then vomiting.

I’m starting to think that people in Kentucky need to have a lot of questions answered, where the hell did we ask for questions before Google, I guess we lived in a world ruled by rumors and miss-information since most people didn’t really go to the library to have mundane questions answered.

Again, some people think of Google as their psychologist or as a frustration release text box… or maybe they’re just looking to find out about a movie, which comes up as the first search result.

What’s with the people in the south of this country?

This tendency seemed to have picked up towards the end of 2008 on Google trends. The first result takes us to a Yahoo! Answers page, and it seems to be related with vegetarians pooping green, with iron, with colorants in food, or deficiencies in the digestive process.

Top 3 states pooping green are Wisconsin, Missouri and Indiana.

- Traffic lights would have sensors for about a mile before each on every direction, no need to have people sitting at red lights when there are no cars coming. Current sensors suck balls.

- All highways would have 50mph minimum speed limit, and optionally a 90mph speed limit.

- To get a driver license you’d have to complete an obstacle course at a speed of at least 60mph. People who can’t do this should not be allowed to drive.

- Cars would Jam Cellphones Signals as soon as they start moving. I’m sick of stupid people on zombie mode when driving, they’re damn dangerous for everyone around, not to mention the ones texting while driving, those probably deserve to have accidents and die or get a big scare as a process of natural selection, too bad that when it happens they kill innocent people along the way.

- If you waste 3 seconds to get your car moving when a light turns green, the traffic light will take a picture of your license plate and send you a ticket for wasting 3 seconds times the number of people you have behind you.

- Drawbridges would be disabled everywhere between 7-10am and between 4-7pm. It’s ridiculous how many man/years in productivity are wasted everyday when these things open up and hold up hundreds of cars so that one stupid boat can pass, specially at peak hours.

- In the future, if cars are to drive themselves, there’d be controlling computers at intersections making sure cars don’t have to ever stop, coordinating car speeds, making them go from all directions at the same time and trying to keep a minimum separation between them only by a few feet. It’d be pretty exciting to go through an intersection on a world like this. No more stupid traffic lights.

Who benefits from Swine Flu

• The US tourism industry by keeping millions of dollars from going to mexico. Just one airplane going to Cancun from say Florida, will take about 300 passengers. In average each passenger will spend at least about $1,000. That’s $300k a pop. I’d imagine there’s at least 10 flights a day going to Cancun from several destinations in the US. That’s $3MM that stay in the US or go somewhere else. Now multiply this by the number of touristic destinations in Mexico plus flights that come from other countries. Their economy must be bleeding tens of millions a day because of this.
• Companies that use pork derived products, now they can get pork for a lot cheaper. Think McDonalds, Wendy’s, Burguer King, Super market chains. Buy low, sell high
• 3M has had to step up their mask production to keep up with the demand coming from CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aid, etc.
• Pharmaceutical companies related to vaccine R&D

In the meantime, I see nothing but a pattern of destructive media against mexico, first it was the Drug lord wars, then Swine Flu, and more recently an Earth Quake (I totally believe the US must have weapons to produce earthquakes, it’s the perfect attack, you can blame it on mother nature)

                          

I was playing with a hex editor recently and then I thought it would be pretty easy to make a program to output what you see on a text editor. Here’s a quick & dirty Hex Visor I wrote in like 5 minutes with Java. It shows 15 bytes per line, and on the right side it prints all the visible characters of the ascii table, the non-visible ones are replaced with “.”

Homework
Hack the code so that it ouputs the first column shown on the HexEdit screenshot. That column represents the byte position of each row. It's basically a counter incremented 16 units at the time, and shown in Hex.

                          

Having all this money, there’s an ingenious evil marketing strategy you can implement that will make you look good, get your free press and it’s only going to cost about $150,000, which is the equivalent of let’s say 3.6 hours worth of your revenue, so think about it, in 3 and half hours from now you should have the budget for it.

There’s however one thing lacking in these technologies to relive the past or to tell stories, and I think it could be one of the most powerful ways of telling a story, smell. We all have at some moment smelled something in particular and have that smell help us vividly remember a moment 10 years ago like if it was today.

I keep thinking on how to do it, and I want to share an idea I had last night after thinking about it for a few minutes.

At first I thought, is there a way to quantify or mix chemicals to produce smells out of basic components, the same way we can do it with color (RGB or other schemes)? hmm, maybe, maybe not, I think there’s too many chemicals involved, so scratch that. However, I believe that a smell, once it hits your brain, it’s nothing more but a series of electrical impulses sent to a specific area of the brain which is in charge of making you smell something.

We need a sensor, our noses, and then that information, somehow must be transformed to electrical impulses, and I think this is the foundation to create a device to record smells.

First we’d need to have some sort of electronic nose, whoever could build this will have to take a serious look on how our nose detects smell in the air. I suppose we’ll have iteration after iteration of this device until it can record up scents not even humans can detect (this reminds me of mp3 and how it just ignores a lot we can’t hear).

Then, once you can record this information, the problem is… how do you get it in the brains of an audience, I don’t think we’d attach anything to our noses and have something mix substances to reproduce a smell, that’d be ridiculous, instead, we need to send an electrical signal to our brain so that the smell can be interpreted and smelt, without using our nose. So I suppose in theory, there will be at some point in history a device that can broadcast brainwaves to a lot of people on a movie theater audience, or on your home tv.

The applications would be awesome… Imagine playing Gears of War 8 with smell, the battlefield experience would be so much more engaging if you could smell the smoke, the lead, the blood, …

After that we’ll probably also figure out a way to record and broadcast weather conditions, and make us feel heat, or cold, or wind, all while sitting in front of our console, or on a movie theater.

If for some crazy reason you start developing this technology, or you know of someone doing it, please let me know, it’d just be awesome to know that this is happening during my lifetime.

What’s with the ilogical scoring? Who came up with 15,30,40,Deuce, Advantage…
Why such an almost random sequence… why not, 1,2,3 ? or if anything 15,30,45!!!

Why when a set is tied 5-5 do they have to do it till 7 (tie-break)?, just let the first to go to 6 win that set, as if the matches weren’t long enough.

Mi hermana y yo agarramos pasta de diente DE LA BLANCA (no uses gel), y empezamos a pulir encima de una mesa el disco con una franela de algodon.

Despues de 5 manos de pulitura, el disco ya casi no se le via la raya, pero el resto de la superficie tenia ciertos rasgunos nuevos por la pulida.

Metemos el juego al Xbox y… si, funciono!

Ahh por cierto, faltó el detalle que cuando te trae la bebida te acerca el cenicero con los cigarros, tabacos y encendedor por si te apetece fumar algo.

Luego mi amigo concluye diciendo:

Marico lo peor es que todo eso seria muy sencillo para hacer para la jeva, casi que con el mercado de la casa te podría dar ese menu facilmente sin gastar en nada, porque básicamente el mercado, los cigarros, y la cerveza o el refresco los pagaste tu… la consola que estas jugando también te la compraste tu… así que básicamente el gran esfuerzo seria mamarte la paloma y no pretender que le pares media bola mientras lo hace y de resto cocinar.

Es muy fácil el secreto de la felicidad para nosotros marico jejejeje.

Crazy american competitions for kids… like spelling bees and stuff like that, I’ll never get it, at least with this one, I don’t get the point, except that it makes you look like a robot.

                          

If you travel on the subway like me, you can travel forward in time if you use the correct doors from train to train, I think you actually travel forward in time, instead of wasting time, if you for example need to Switch to L on 14st and you’re at Canal St, all you need to do, is take the express Yellow Line (I think it’s the R), but to make the best of your time, you need to walk to the very last cart of that platform, you make use of your “waiting time” to travel forward in time (or save time) once you get to 14st, since you get off, and the stairs to the L transfer will be right on the end of the track, then you go down stairs, and if you’re lucky enough, you can make it to the L without waiting.

I say you travel forward in time, cause if you get on the first car of the R, you will loose all your “waiting time” sitting at the beginnnig, and then you will have to do the walk you didn’t do in Canal St, when you get to Union Square…

so… in short, after this absurd, but “clear” example (yeah right), what’s the solution?

Make everybody travel like this…

If you do, and you have a well designed system, based on mining patterns on how your metro users travel every day, you could design the metro system to have people ride in certain cars.

You could either… mark cars of the train to say:

“This car will give you an optimum get off time if you get off at:
- station blah, blah, blah
or if you need to transfer to: L, 1,2,3″

So, you don’t stand in the way for people that actually need to get off and run for their next transfer…
anyway… just the thought of a maniac of traveling optimally on the subway.

Not sure if this made any sense gramatically, and I don’t think its even worth revising it… just ventilating my frustration with slow people…

Oh, and another thing, there should be “Staircases for People in a Hurry”, or “Fast Lanes in Staircases”, not just Up and Down directions, but actual, fast stair cases, so we don’t have to smell people’s asses going up the stairs like they’re doing a walk on the zoo on a sunday, please move your ass on the stairs people, you can make people loose transfers.

Si quieres ver archivos de ayuda en HTML compilado tipo Windows, pero en Linux, es decir abrir archivos .CHM en Linux, utiliza xchm.

Para instalar en Ubuntu, es tan sencillo como hacer sudo apt-get install xchm, luego solo invocas el programa y abres tus archivos .CHM.

Investigadores han construido y probado una maquina (para uso militar) portatil que convierte de manera eficiente desperdicios en electricidad.

Un proyecto de energia-apartir-de-desperdicios guiado por investigadores de la universidad de Purdue, le da un nuevo significado al termino “Poder Militar”. Cientificos del departamento de agricultura e ingenieria biologica de la universidad, han desarrollado una maquina portatil que convierte una variedad de desperdicios de alimentos y basura inorganica en electricidad, reduciendo la cantidad de combustible diesel y basura que los soldados deben cargar con ellos en el campo.

Ademas de ser lo suficientemente pequena como para transportar un contenedor de 20 pies, la “refineria tactica” consiste en 3 tecnologias en una:

• Un Bioreactor que utiliza enzimas y micro organismos para convertir desperdicoi de comida en etanol
• Una “Gasificacion” que convierte plasticos, papel y otros desperdicios residuales en metao y propano de bajo grado
• Un motor diesel modificado que puede quemar gas, etanol y contenido diesel en proporciones variables.

El motor le da energia a un generador que produce la electricidad, Michael Ladisch, investigador lider, dice: “Lo que es unico, es la forma en que el sistema esta integrado”

Se requiere combustible Diesel para las primeras horas en que la maquina debe encender desde cero. Eventualmente, basura, tal como desperdicio de comida, es alimentada al sistema, el resultado es etanol y gas que gradualmente desplazan al combustible diesel, el cual es reducido al minimo goteo. El producto resultante de la maquina, es una ceniza benigna que se limpia cada ciertos dias.

Dos prototipos seran enviados a otros paises para realizar demostraciones de 6 meses. Se espera que el sistema pueda ser encojido otro 60%, haciendolo lo suficientemente pequeno para meterlo en un Trailer. Los desarrolladores esperan que un dia sea practico para ser empleado en zonas civiles, como en zonas para recuperacion de desastre, o simplemente como una forma de generar electricidad en lugares donde existe demasiado desperdicio organico e inorganico.

“Este es el camino a seguir, de una perspectiva de sostenibilidad”, dice Kartik Chandran, profesor asistente de ingenieria de tierra y ambiente en la universidad de Columbia. Chandran dice que sistemas como el disenado por Purdue no son solo ideales para aplicaciones militares pero tambien serian sumamente utiles en paises pobres que generalmente no tienen electricidad. “El reto mas grande esta en separar el combustible una vez que se ha producido, y luego limpiarlo para no danar tu sistema de combustion”

El proyecto purdue inicialmente estudio los tipicos productos de desperdicios que crean los soldados en el campo, para seleccionar las mejores tecnologias de conversion de energia. Un proceso biocatalitico fue elegido para lidiar con la parcion de comida en el desperdicio. El truco fue obtener el pH y el balance de la temperatura correcto para la mezcla de enzimas y microorganismos que los investigadores eligieron. Para plasticos, madera y otro desperdicio que no fuese comida, estos elementos pueden ser descompuestos en un bioreactor, un gasificador fue desarrollado para exponer el material a calor extremo en un ambiente de poco oxigeno.

“Tuvimos suerte”, dice Ladisch, indicando el complejo modelamiento matematico que se requirio para que todas las partes funcionaran correctamente en conjunto. “Giramos la llave, y prendio de verdad, esto nunca habia sucedido en mi carrera anteriormente”

Creo en Dios (o como le quieran llamar), pero no creo en NINGUNA religion, mucho antes de este blasphemy challenge he hecho tal afirmacion, y desde que lei el codigo davinci perdi todo miedo alguno del fulano infierno. Al parecer cientificos Canadienses encontraron la cura a muchos tipos de Cancer, con una droga llamada “Dichloroacetate” (DCA), la cual en terminos simples, apaga la inmortalidad de las celulas cancerigenas.

El unico problema, es que seguro te enteraste por mi blog, y no por la television, o el periodico.

Al parecer las empresas farmaceuticas no les conviene que la droga sea barata de crear (ya que no tiene patente), asi que no es negocio para ellos, y no les conviene que se haga publicidad.

Hay todo un debate al respecto en la blogosfera norteamericana.

El ano pasado tuve la suerte de ver el trailer de 300 en el cine (mas abajo linkeado desde youtube), y por supuesto se me olvido el nombre de la pelicula.

Luego salio por ahi una pelicula llamada The Fountain que me recordaba al trailer de 300 a cada rato, pero era una tortura no recordar el nombre “300″ pq no podia contarles, pero de todos modos, ese trailer no se le acercaba ni por las patas a las imagenes de 300.

Total que anoche viendo Heroes en NBC en uno de los cortes pusieron el trailer y tuve que venir a escribirles este post antes de que se me olvide.

My initial proposal would be to tax per every pound extra, per month, there should be standards defined based on your age and size.

Say something like one dolar per extra pound a month would do the trick. Millions of dollars could be used towards Health care and to those that declare themselves as hopelessly fat (which is bullcrap cause I saw that show called The Biggest Looser, and big whales ended up skinny with a lot of hard work) could get liposuctions and treatment from all that money.

What do you say? How do we propose the Fat Tax? $1 per extra pound a month!

Para que tengan una idea, vamos a sacar la cuenta suponiendo que pudieras ahorrarte 12 minutos de tu casa al trabajo todos los dias.

En 5 viajes de ida, seria un total de 1 hora ahorrada, ahora sumale los viajes de vuelta, tienes 2 horas ahorradas a la semana.

En 52 semanas de trabajo, esto se traduce en 104 horas anuales, que es aproximadamente 4.3 dias al ano.

Imaginate ahora en tu trayecto diario, donde carajo pasas esos 4 dias esperando. En semaforos? Esperando por un autobus? Por un tren? En una cola?

Espero que esto te haga reflexionar en el valor de ahorrar unos 12 minutos diarios, que pudieras usar para dormir, estar con tu familia, o dedicarselos a un proyecto especial para marcar una diferencia en tu vida.

Imaginate cuantos dias perdi yo viajando 2 horas diarias a la universidad por varios anos :(, si estas contemplando mudarte a un nuevo lugar, ten muy en cuenta el tiempo de viaje a tu trabajo o escuela, puede marcar una gran diferencia en tu calidad de vida.

- Would there be +3 women per man? or Would there be +3 men per woman? (The latter would suck, we’d have to share wifes, yes I’m not a feminist, so sue me)
- What If I’m the only man in this wagon and I can’t have children?
- Should we allow ugly people to reproduce?
- Should we allow dumb people to reproduce?
- Should we allow sick/weak people to reproduce?

Endless questions will arise, try it next time you hop on the subway, if you’re bored.

Certainly I’d prefer being on an L train if this happened to me, definitively not on the A train after 9pm.

And come to think about it, I started playing this game every day on my head after I started watching lost.

I still have nightmares I’m being mugged on the street, last night I dreamed I was walking from La Previsora to Av. Libertador, and two motherfuckers were trying to get my wallet, I started screaming “Policia! Policia!” and started running so the son of a bitch wouldn’t get me. I’ve been living in the US since 2003, I still have nightmares.

If you live in a safe country, don’t take for granted the chance to walk without fear at night, to not have to check out the window every 5 minutes if your car is getting cause you parked it on the street, to not be afraid everytime you stop at a red light, to go to an ATM and not fear for an express kidnap, to be able to wear whatever you want without fear, to be able to use your ipod or play with your new phone, or use your laptop on the subway, bus or in a public park, to not have to look behind you in case you’re being followed.

Security is one of the best privileges you can enjoy, don’t take it for granted.

                          

I tried to see this movie twice during the weekend (opening weekend) and it was always sold out, finally went to see it last night at 10:25pm and it was a full theater. I had no clue what the movie was about, other than an action film by Martin Scorsese, with Jack Nicholson, Matt Damon and Leo Dicaprio…

Damn… it was one hell of a movie, a monster of a movie.

The original screenplay is called “Internal Affairs”, and you’ll not only see a great action film, but a funny, smart, action THRILLER.

If you want to enjoy smart and funny characters, see some good action, and if you like to pay attention to how a well made movie is produced, shot, acted, shot and edited, don’t miss this.

You’ll laugh your ass with Alec Baldwin and Mark Wahlberg… oh, and if you’ve been to Boston, you’ll enjoy the exteriors, the film is shot in Boston.

So many work arounds to center divs, that I was almost getting to the point where I was about to start selling black t-shirts with the words

float:center

If you’re a web developer, web designer, and you have to deal with CSS, and CSS not working properly on IE (cause of it’s stupid box model conception and endless ilogic behaviour bugs) then I’m sure you have always wanted to be able to do something like “float:center”

I don’t really get why the people that made the CSS standards, didn’t include stupid float:center… there’s float:left, float:right… it’s only obvious. And worst of all, you know centering is one very important thing…

so we have to go around doing stuff like

margin:0 auto;

but that won’t really work on all occasions, you have to think of the size of the parent elements too, so that the auto margins will work correctly.

The other day a friend that’s a graphic designer even came up with his own trick of using percentages to add correct margins to center divs.

But look no more (at least until they decide to give us float:center), if you use Prototype, maybe you also use Scriptaculous…
