{"id":2499,"date":"2011-10-20T09:03:40","date_gmt":"2011-10-20T13:03:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gubatron.com\/blog\/?p=2499"},"modified":"2011-10-20T09:03:40","modified_gmt":"2011-10-20T13:03:40","slug":"solved-updated-to-ubuntu-11-10-on-virtualbox-and-now-you-get-a-blank-screen-when-you-reboot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gubatron.com\/blog\/solved-updated-to-ubuntu-11-10-on-virtualbox-and-now-you-get-a-blank-screen-when-you-reboot\/","title":{"rendered":"[SOLVED] Updated to Ubuntu 11.10 on VirtualBox and now you get a blank screen when you reboot?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So you used the update manager to upgrade to the new Ubuntu 11.10 that came out a couple days ago and when you&#8217;re finished with the process, next time it boots you get a blank screen.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.gubatron.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/ubuntu_blank_screen_updating_to_11.10_screenshot_solution_1.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Do this:<\/p>\n<p>1. <strong>Switch to a terminal.<\/strong><br \/>\n   Press &#8220;Ctrl+Alt+F1&#8221; if you&#8217;re on Windows.<br \/>\n   or<br \/>\n   Press &#8220;Cmd + F1&#8221; or &#8220;Ctrl + Alt_option + F1&#8221; if you on MacOSX.<\/p>\n<p>You will now be on a text based terminal (TTY1), and you will see that your VM has booted fine, you just didn&#8217;t have a graphical environment, therefore the blank screen.<\/p>\n<p>2. <strong>Login in<\/strong> with your account on this text based terminal by entering your credentials.<\/p>\n<p>3. <strong>Install virtualbox-ose-guest-utils.<\/strong><br \/>\n(Yes, I also had my virtual guest additions installed before so that I could have full screen resolution, but the problem seems to be related to this and now ubuntu has a package on their repos that you need.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>sudo apt-get install virtualbox-ose-guest-utils<\/strong> [enter]<\/p>\n<p>4. <strong>Reboot<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>sudo reboot<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;re done.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.gubatron.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/ubuntu_blank_screen_updating_to_11.10_screenshot_solution_2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.gubatron.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/ubuntu_blank_screen_updating_to_11.10_screenshot_solution_2.jpg?w=640\"  alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So you used the update manager to upgrade to the new Ubuntu 11.10 that came out a couple days ago and when you&#8217;re finished with the process, next time it boots you get a blank screen.
